We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Esperance Wildlife Hospital is officially an Associate Member of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Advisory Group of Western Australia (WRAGWA)!
This is a significant milestone for our dedicated team of volunteers and a major step forward for wildlife conservation on the South Coast.
What is WRAGWA?
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Advisory Group of Western Australia (WRAGWA) is a critical representative body that advocates for the future of wildlife care across our state. They are the driving force behind the recent "Step Up For Wildlife" campaign, which is actively pushing for sustainable State Government funding to secure the future of wildlife rescue, veterinary treatment, and rehabilitation in WA.
By uniting hospitals, rescue groups, and licensed rehabilitators under one cohesive voice, WRAGWA ensures that the essential community service of wildlife rescue is recognized, supported, and properly funded at a legislative level.
Why This Matters for Esperance
As the primary triage and professional care facility on the South Coast, our integration into WRAGWA connects us directly with a powerful statewide network. This associate membership means:
A Louder Voice for the South Coast: The unique ecological challenges we face here in Esperance, from marine strandings and vagrant seabird rescues to managing the fallout of regional bushfires, will now be represented on a statewide platform.
Enhanced Biosecurity and Emergency Response: As we saw during our recent frontline efforts in containing Australia's first H5N1 cases, coordinated disease surveillance is critical. WRAGWA’s focus on statewide emergency response and biosecurity aligns perfectly with our hospital’s rigorous protocols.
Funding and Resource Advocacy: WRAGWA is actively fighting for funding that supports wildlife hospitals, volunteer training, and regional groups. Being part of this group strengthens our ability to secure the resources we need to keep our doors open and our advanced species triage operating at the highest level.
Looking Ahead
As a professional environmental consultant and a licensed wildlife carer, I know firsthand that grassroots conservation cannot happen in a silo. We rely on community synergy, shared knowledge, and structural support to make a real difference. Joining WRAGWA bridges the gap between our local, hands-on work at the sanctuary and the broader, statewide movement to protect Western Australia's unique biodiversity.
We are so proud to stand alongside our fellow WA rehabilitators to ensure that our native wildlife receives the care it deserves for generations to come. Thank you to all our volunteers, supporters, and community partners who have helped Esperance Wildlife Hospital reach a level of operational excellence where we can contribute to this vital statewide advisory group!
